Getting to know someone goes beyond physical attractiveness. Being physically attractive to a person is important for some, but getting to know someone should go beyond physical attractiveness. According to Buss (1994), Men prefer to mate with beautiful young women whereas women prefer to mate with men who have resources and social status (p 239) (Huffman and Piggrem (2003).
According to Huffman and Piggrem, (2003), once you’ve had the repeated opportunity to get to know someone, assuming you are attracted to the person, you need something to hold the relationship together overtime, and that something is similarity. The major factor that would seal the relationship is similarity. The more similar you are with the person, the more there is hope for a long lasting relationship. The following are tips for moving beyond physical attraction to seeking a long lasting relationship.
- Determine and examine similarities, similar interest.
- Communication is key to long lasting relationships. How well do you communicate?
- Consider your shared values and morals. Do you share the same values?
- Life expectations. How important is family and children to both of you?
